How Many Atheists Live in California?
Are you an atheist living in California? You're not alone!
1 in 10 residents of The Golden State identify as atheist or agnostic.
According to the Pew Research Center, 27% of Californians identify as religiously “Unaffiliated,” with 4% of those identifying as “Atheists” and 5% identifying as “Agnostic.”
That’s the largest non-Christian identity by a mile!
Atheists and agnostics alone make up a larger demographic than all non-Christian faith identities (Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and Other) COMBINED!
Who Are California's Atheists?
While atheists can be found in every demographic, some groups show stronger affiliation with a secular identity in California:
Youth: Gen X, Millenial, and Gen Z Californians are far more likely to identify as atheists compared to older generations.
Highly Educated: Atheists in California are on average more educated than other religious identities.
Male: Men are currently more comfortable identifying as atheists or agnostics than women. Privilege and intersectionality likely have a lot to do with this.
