SMART Recovery® (Self Management And Recovery Training) helps individuals gain independence from addictive substances and activities.

Welcome to our community! Our discussions are based on scientific knowledge and evolve as scientific knowledge evolves. SMART is helpful for some participants primarily because they become involved with a new community of helpful and friendly people. For others, SMART is helpful primarily because they learn new ways of thinking about themselves and their behavior.

Although we have science-based ideas for you to consider, no one will tell you what to do. Our slogan is “Discover the Power of Choice.” For many SMART is a combination of a new community and new ways of thinking. You can be involved with SMART in whatever way you want to. Andrew Seidel Book Reading at Heretic House

Andrew Seidel Book Reading at Heretic House

Join Atheists United for an intimate book reading with author and activist, Andrew Seidel!

His newest book, American Crusade: How the Supreme Court is Weaponizing Religious Freedom, was just released in September and examines some of the key Supreme Court cases of the last thirty years and how a hallowed legal protection, freedom of religion, has been turned into a tool to advance privilege and impose religion on others. This is a meticulously researched and deeply insightful account of our political landscape with a foreword provided by noted constitutional scholar Erwin Chemerinsky, author of The Case Against the Supreme Court.

Limit capacity venue. Get tickets before they run out.

$5 for Atheists United members (and their guests). $15 for the general public. Get an Atheists United membership here and support more events like this in Los Angeles.

The event will include a book reading and signing with Siedel followed by a happy hour hosted by Atheists United. Free street parking is available. We highly recommend public transportation or ridesharing.

__

Andrew is the author of two books:The Founding Myth: Why Christian Nationalism Is Un-American (2019) and American Crusade: How the Supreme Court is Weaponizing Religious Freedom. He’s also co-editor of an academic text, Law and Religion: Cases and Materials (Foundation Press, 2022) 5th Edition, with Prof. Leslie Griffin of UNLV law school.

While writing the epilogue for The Founding Myth, Andrew conceived of and organized the groundbreaking “Christian Nationalism at the January 6, 2021, Insurrection” report which was published by the Baptist Joint Committee and FFRF. He contributed two section, briefed members of Congress on the report, which led to a fiery speech on the House floor, and was asked to submit testimony to the January 6th Committee, which he did in March 2022.

A Senior Correspondent at Religion Dispatches, Andrew’s written many opeds and several scholarly articles, and has debated the existence of God, the tax-exempt worthiness of politicking churches, and whether America was founded as a Christian nation.

Andrew graduated cum laude from Tulane University (’04) with a B.S. in neuroscience and environmental science and magna cum laude from Tulane University Law School (’09, part of the first post-Katrina class), where he was awarded the Haber J. McCarthy Award for excellence in environmental law. He studied human rights and international law at the University of Amsterdam and traveled the world on Semester at Sea. Andrew completed his Master of Laws at Denver University Sturm College of Law (’11) with a perfect GPA and was awarded the Outstanding L.L.M. Award for his work as the Erik Bluemel International Environmental Law Fellow.

Religion, Democracy, & the 2024 Elections

Religion, Democracy, & the 2024 Elections

2024 is the first presidential election since the January 6th insurrection, raising important questions about what will happen in the days and months after election day on November 5th. Will we have a peaceful transfer of power? Will there be legal and/or illegal attempts to change election outcomes? Given the deep and wide role of religion in our public square — and the Insurrection — what role will religious communities play in fomenting anti-democratic movements and mobilizing pro-democracy coalitions? This event will gather an illustrious group of scholars and leaders to help process what happened — and prepare for what's next.

Sponsored by Americans United For Separation of Church and State and USC Knight Program in Media and Religion.

Panel 1:

Andrew L. Seidel (Constitutional Laywer at Americans United of Separation of Church and State and Author of The Founding Myth and American Crusade), Arlene Sanchez Walsh (Author of Pentecostals in America)

Panel 2:

Rachel Laser (President and CEO at Americans United for Separation of Church and State), Khyati Joshi (Farleigh Dickinson University, Author of White Christian Privilege), and Brad Onishi (Co-host of Straight White American Jesus, Author of Preparing for War),

Moderated by Dan Miller (Landmark College, Host of Straight White American Jesus).

  • PARKING in the Cathedral lot and across the street at AAA. Security will be present throughout the evening in the parking lots and at the Cathedral.

  • RECEPTION: Ticket holders are also invited to a light reception and book signing prior to the start of the event at 6pm outside the Cathedral.

  • AFTER PARTY: All in person attendees will be invited to an after party at a nearby location. Details shared at the event.

More about the Panelists:

Khyati Joshi is full Professor in the School of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University and aco-founder of the Institute for Teaching Diversity and Social Justice (IDSJ). She is the author of White Christian Privilege - The Illusion of Religious Equality in America.

Rachel Laser is a lawyer and the current President and CEO of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Brad Onishi is faculty in Religion and Philosophy at the University of San Francisco. He is the author of Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism–And What Comes Next, and co-host of the Straight White American Jesus podcast.

San Fernando Valley Meetup (Online)

YOU MUST REGISTER ON MEETUP IN ADVANCE TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ZOOM MEETING.

Our Meetup is hosted every 1st Monday and 3rd Thursday evening of the month (3rd Thursday in person and 1st Monday on Zoom). All are welcome!

🛑What to expect:

Discussion sparked by short videos about atheism, religion, science, current events, critical thinking, comedy, life hacks, health, and beyond >>> followed by moderated discussions.

🛑Meeting format:

This is a place for atheists to meet, have dinner with each other (eating on camera is ok), and network with fellow atheists, skeptics, and humanists.

A few agnostics and religious people sometimes show up and participate and they are welcome as long as they leave the dogma and proselytizing at home.

We mandate courtesy and respect to fellow attendees. First and foremost, this is a social gathering and support group for like-minded persons, not a debate club. If you're coming just to argue on matters of religion or politics, don't bother showing up, you're not going to convert anyone, and you will be asked to leave.

🛑Details:

This is a 2-hour event, but often we go overtime when the discussion and the great atmosphere it requires; or when we can't get enough of seeing familiar faces and perhaps some new ones. Feel free to stay as long or as short as you'd like.

Look out for topics posted in the discussion section and please place your own ideas, questions, or concerns in the comments and please feel free to private message any of our co-organizers by clicking on their names.

We welcome your unique point of view and add to the discussion.

Secular Latinos San Gabriel Valley Meetup

¡Hola! Everyone.

This meetup is being scheduled for every second Sunday (of the month) at 10 am. It's scheduled for two hours to allow people to come and go as they wish.

Let’s get together and talk about important secular issues that affect our community. What do you care about? Let’s chat!

This event aims to get to know the Secular Latinx community of the San Gabriel Valley. This group is an excellent opportunity to connect with other Secular Latinx in the SGV! If you are an atheist/secular/freethinker/agnostic/skeptic/humanist, a questioning Latinx, or just a curious Latinx, come on out and meet others like you.

RSVP is not required but encouraged.

This meetup respects family dynamics and will respect your privacy. Photographs of you will not be taken and posted in this group without your consent.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,
Arlene

Hike to M*A*S*H Film Set

Atheists United Humanist Hike Malibu Creek State Park - MASH Set

Join Atheists United for a community hike in the incredible Malibu Creek State Park in Agoura Hills!

Our hike will take us through film history, passing former set locations for M*A*S*H and Planet of the Apes (the originals).

  • Very little shade on hike! Dress accordingly.

  • Hike will take about 3 hours -- Bring lots of water!

  • View the hike here (includes short detour to Malibu Creek)

  • Bathrooms available at entrance of hike

MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK DETAILS:

Malibu Creek State Park, located in Calabasas, CA within the Santa Monica Mountains, and former site of the 20th Century Fox movie ranch. Park features hiking, fishing, bird watching, mountain biking, rock climbing and horseback riding opportunities. The park is composed of Kaslow Nature Preserve, Liberty canyon Nature Preserve, Tapia Park, and Udell George Nature Preserve.
Fourteen-mile Malibu Creek is the principal watercourse of the Santa Monica Mountains that ends at Malibu Lagoon. . There are 15 miles of streamside trail through oak and sycamore woodlands on chaparral-covered slopes. Following the trail along Malibu Creek, the visitor will be treated to spectacular vistas, including volcanic rock gorges, scenic pools, and breathtaking views of the Las Virgenes Valley and Malibu Canyon.

Culturally, this area was the center of Chumash Native American life for centuries. One of the park's most significant points of interest is the Sepulveda Adobe, which was constructed in 1863 on what had been part of an early Spanish land grant. This historic structure was restored in 2003, but unfortunately was destroyed in the 2018 Woolsey fire. In the early 1900's another adobe was built along Malibu Creek by Johnny Mott, a famous LA attorney. With only the dramatic stone fireplace left standing, it is known today as the Mott Adobe ruins. Perhaps the most prominent frequent guest at the Mott Adobe was President Herbert Hoover.

Previous to being opened to the public in 1976, the park was used extensively to film numerous movies and TV shows, such as Planet of the Apes and M*A*S*H. Most of the park’s land holdings were acquired from 20th Century Fox, which purchased the former Crags Country Club for on-location film and television filming. The original Planet of the Apes movie and the beloved M*A*S*H TV show were among dozens or perhaps hundreds of productions filmed here continuing to this day.
